Film Poster Friday #7: John Carter

This week’s big movie release hits with a variety of poster designs, some which I really like and some which are average at best.

Starting with the ones I like. The design above – which I imagine is more of a ‘teaser’ poster – is really simple, logo free but with tribal-esque graphics overlaying a shot of the titular hero it really piques my interest. But then the treatment of the same image below – adding logos, grunge layers, release details etc – totally ruins it.

The following image of John Carter threatened by two massive alien beasts in some kind of arena setting really conveys the scale of the film and gives a hint to the kind of action we can expect. Not too keen on the massive scale of the typography though – but hey this is an IMAX poster, so I guess it’s all about scale!

The last poster featured here is really poor, in my opinion. The bad tribal tattoo style overlay and the flat image of John Carter really do nothing for me and the gaping black space in the top third totally overpowers the image.

Finally, I’ve embedded the trailer, in case you haven’t seen it already. To be honest, I’m not bothered about seeing this movie, it really feels like it’s trying to hard, throwing to much at the screen, but I’m interested to see what people have to say about it. Me, I’ll probably go and see Rampart instead – now that looks like a movie!!
